Rebecca Wang Supports the 23rd Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party

Rebecca Wang joined Miley Cyrus, Steven Tyler and Sharon Osbourne to support the 23rd annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party and the foundation’s mission of HIV/AIDS prevention, education, and treatment.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, Rebecca Wang, A-list celebrities and leading figures of the entertainment industry rallied in Hollywood, not only for the Academy Awards, but also to endorse the most high-profile event of the evening, the Elton John AIDS Foundation Viewing Party. Now in its 23rd year, this annual celebration has the distinction of being the largest of its kind to take place on Oscar night.

According to the Foundation’s website, to date the Viewing Party has raised nearly $45 million towards the Foundation’s many HIV/AIDS prevention and education initiatives. Its U.S. and U.K. branches have together raised more than $300 million since 1992 to support programs in 55 countries.

The evening is made possible each year through generous support and funding at both individual and corporate levels.

This year’s party took place in West Hollywood Park, Los Angeles. Sir Elton John and David Furnish gave thanks to event chairs and other supporters who include Rebecca Wang, Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Heidi Klum as well to Chopard, Neuro and Wells Fargo, sponsors for the evening, and to West Hollywood for hosting the party.

An executive film producer and entrepreneur, Rebecca Wang is a long term supporter of the Foundation and its work and over the years has been a devoted patron of numerous Foundation events, both in the U.S. and U.K.

“Through its care, treatment and prevention initiatives across so many countries, the Foundation has moved mountains in the global fight against AIDS and the ignorance that surrounds it,” Wang said. “I am always proud to support the Viewing Party and its ground-breaking fundraising.”

The black-tie evening commenced at 4 p.m. when guests, including Miley Cyrus, Steven Tyler and Sharon Osbourne gathered firstly for cocktails rimmed in edible gold and sourced by Patron Tequila, then proceded at 5 p.m. to a lavish dinner prepared by Gordon Ramsey, during which they were able to watch a live telecast of the 87th annual Academy Awards.

The famous live auction, known to raise millions of dollars in donations, followed. Auctioneer Alexander Gilkes, co-founder and president of Paddle8, oversaw the fierce and exuberant bidding for the unique and exclusive lots. Afterward, music icon Nile Rodgers and his band Chic performed live before guests danced the evening away to tunes spun by DJ Johnny Dynell.

Leading figures in the field, including actors Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon, Ralph Fiennes, producer Rebecca Wang and director Mike Leigh attended the ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry.

The excellence in modern British cinema was captured by Sunday’s award decisions. Films that told the stories of outstanding innovators Alan Turing and Professor Stephen Hawking were heavily nominated, and the latter’s early life story in The Theory of Everything gained Outstanding British Film with Eddie Redmayne earning Best Actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking.

Boyhood which emerged victorious in the coveted Best Film category also scooped up Best Director for Richard Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette, while Best Actress went to Julianne Moore for her role in Still Alice.

JK Simmons won Best Supporting Actor, and veteran UK director Mike Leigh was honoured with a highly esteemed BAFTA Fellowship, joining the ranks of previous honourees Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor

Outside of the US awards, the BAFTA UK ceremony is considered to be the most significant world-wide. Its results are viewed as reliable predictors for the Academy Awards, which take place two weeks later.

Beyond its renown for celebrating the very best in its fields, BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) is a charity organisation which offers year-round education schemes extending the reach of the moving image arts. Its Scholarship Programme enables British youngsters, especially those gifted in film, television or video games to continue postgraduate study and training in the UK and abroad. In 2013, BAFTA President, HRH Prince William launched the Give Something Back campaign, calling on BAFTA members and film studios to support his initiative.

London-based Hollywood executive producer, Rebecca Wang attended Sunday’s ceremony in her capacity as a member of the Academy Circle and is a longstanding supporter of the Scholarship Programme.

She said:

It is both a pleasure and a privilege for me to give something back and play a part in helping extend and develop the remarkable range of talent in the United Kingdom. These young people are the future of excellence in the field of creative moving arts and will ensure that the very best in film, television and video continues to be accessible for, and appreciated by, the British public.
